The Department of English, GDC Mahanpur came into being in the year
2012 with the inception of the college. In 2012, the department offered English as a subject for BA
undergraduate students. Keeping in pace with new trends in education system, Choice Based Credit
System (CBCS) was introduced in the year 2015. To meet the expanding academic needs of the students,
various courses for Skill Enhancement like Communication English, English Language Teaching, Media
and Communication, Journalism and Phonetics etc. were adopted to facilitate the language skills required for developing competency and cultivate a value added life to face challenges and achieve
excellence..Also, the department is proud to have adequate learning resources in Departmental Library
with more than 2000 book titles related to English Language and Literature to strengthen teaching and
learning along with expanding the horizon of knowledge of students. The underlying philosophy of the
department is that all the students develop proficiency in English both oral and written, learn about the
English language in a global, multicultural context and learn the appreciation of all forms of literature
through core and skill courses. To fulfill the purpose,the students are taught a wide selection of texts,
including prose, plays, poetry and non-fiction texts in their curriculum as prescribed by University of
Jammu.
